A cocktail reception will begin at 6:30pm followed by dinner at 7:00pm. The evening will include a short introduction and live performance of Dr. MacKay’s Taiwanese Opera as well as a silent auction supported by donations from our community. We will continue the celebration with live music and dancing.
The evening will also feature remarks from people who have benefited from and supported MacKay Memorial Hospital since it opened its doors to the neediest residents in our community. We are depending on the willingness of our community to contribute to our work in the season of giving during our silent auction and raffle.
The MacKay Charity Gala is being hosted in honor of Dr. George Leslie MacKay and his family’s contributions to Taiwan. He was the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary to visit Taiwan.
Dr. MacKay arrived at the end of 1871, and he spent the next 30 years dedicating his life to helping Taiwanese communities. Dr. MacKay is revered as one of Taiwan’s most famous ‘native sons’. His story and memoir provide valuable insight into his life, background, and legacy, as well as the Taiwanese cultural background in which he worked. His lifetime achievements are a true demonstration of his love for Taiwan and its people.
The founding and creation of MacKay Memorial Hospital was one of Dr. MacKay’s greatest achievements in life. MacKay Memorial Hospital has a long tradition of bringing high-quality health care to the people of Taiwan.
Although the hospital was founded in Tamsui, it wasn’t until 1912 that the hospital was moved to its present-day location in Taipei City. From then onwards, MacKay Memorial Hospital developed a strong and long-serving tradition of serving those who were often ignored by others, such as the caring for leprosy patients, the establishment of the first Polio Center in Taiwan, the first intensive care wards and a burn ward; and the first Cleft Lip and Palate and Maxillofacial Surgery Division.
With the success of this year’s MacKay Charity Gala event, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan will provide additional funding to the Children’s Wing of the MacKay Memorial Hospital. Your generosity will provide Taiwanese children in need with high-quality medical support and care.
We look forward to your attendance at this worthwhile charity event and gala celebration. Your support will mean a great deal to MacKay Memorial Hospital and to the young children that make use of its Children’s Ward.
